Vietnam to develop promising markets as it surpasses $8bn target in 2017

Vietnam will aim to earn an export value on aquatic products of $8.5 billion in 2018, up 1.2% annually, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD)’s directorate of fisheries.

Total aquatic production is estimated at 7 million metric tons, down 3.8% year-on-year. Up to 3m metric tons of this will be caught offshore, and the remainder will be farmed, down 13.3% and up 4%, respectively.
MARD also said the target for brackish water-farmed shrimp was 720,000t, marking a 13.1% rise, while pangasius output should increase 4% to 1.3m metric tons.
The directorate of fisheries' acting head, Nguyen Ngoc Oai, said tiger shrimp output would be maintained and vannamei shrimp breeding developed in advantageous areas.
In 2017 total aquatic export earnings hit $8.3bn, up 17.8% annually, said MARD. Total aquatic production volume and value reached 7.1m metric tons.
Speaking at an event held to honor Vietnam's first seafood shipment of the year, the minister of agriculture and rural development asked the sector to focus on developing promising markets such as Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and China, reports Vietnam Plus.
Enterprises should improve the quality and design of their products to create more added value, and build a trademark for Vietnamese seafood in the world market, he added.
